Nationwide NAFO Metrics

NAFO members manage about 47M of the 360M acres of private working forests in the U.S.
NAFO members plant 370M seedlings and regrow 1.4M acres of working forests annually. They also perform health treatments on 812,000 acres each year with thinnings, pest and disease treatments, prescribed burns, fuels reduction mitigation, and other management activities that enhance forest growth and resilience.
NAFO forests protect 190,000 miles of streams and rivers, protecting surface water supplies and quality. Together, these streams and rivers are nearly 8x the length of the equator.
NAFO members are engaged in 686 conservation projects, and 1 in 4 NAFO acres is enrolled or participating in a conservation program or project.
NAFO forests annually sequester 60 MMT of CO₂e and store 12,726 MMT of CO₂e. New harvested wood products add about 100 MMT of CO₂e each year to the 9,800 MMT of CO₂e already stored in the harvested wood products sink. Private working forests provide 90% of harvests for wood and fiber, while accounting for over 80% of all annual U.S. forest-carbon sequestration.
NAFO members annually fund $21.7M million of forest related research. At this annual rate, NAFO research funding will total more than $100 million of over the next five years.
